چکیده

The processing speed of many neuronal systems requires temporal coding. Recently, a temporal rank order code has been suggested that uses the temporal order of spikes, disregarding their precise timing. A rank order-coded spike pattern can be decoded by an array of synaptic weights and a postsynaptic desensitization process. We show that a multi-compartmental model of a cerebellar Purkinje cell can implement rank order decoding of temporal parallel "bre input patterns. Basis of the temporal decoding is the activation of KCa channels in the Purkinje cell dendrites. The model responds preferentially to spatio-temporal patterns which are ordered according to increasing synaptic strengths. c © 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Adaptive leaky integrator models of cerebellar Purkinje cells can learn the clustering of temporal patterns

We have shown previously that the metabotropic glutamate receptor signalling network in a cerebellar Purkinje cell can implement adaptive postsynaptic delays. Here we present a leaky integrator version of the Purkinje cell model which uses a simple synaptic delay learning rule. We show that a single leaky integrator can learn a radial basis function-like response to temporal parallel "bre patte...

Spatio-temporal aspects of information processing in the cerebellar cortex

The cerebellum is a phylogenetically ancient part of the vertebrate brain, which is crucial for accurately timing complex motor tasks. Accumulating evidence suggests that the cerebellum is also involved in other tasks, such as sensory processing and cognitive tasks. The role of the cerebellum in this diverse set of tasks is heatedly debated. The cerebellum has been suggested to...

Power Spectral Density Analysis of Purkinje Cell Tonic and Burst Firing Patterns From a Rat Model of Ataxia and Riluzole Treated

Introduction: Purkinje Cell (PC) output displays a complex firing pattern consisting of high frequency sodium spikes and low frequency calcium spikes, and disruption in this firing behavior may contribute to cerebellar ataxia. Riluzole, neuroprotective agent, has been demonstrated to have neuroprotective effects in cerebellar ataxia. Here, the spectral analysis of PCs firing in control, 3-acety...

Loss of the calcium channel β4 subunit impairs parallel fibre volley and Purkinje cell firing in cerebellum of adult ataxic mice

The auxiliary voltage-gated calcium channel subunit β4 supports targeting of calcium channels to the cell membrane, modulates ionic currents and promotes synaptic release in the central nervous system. β4 is abundant in cerebellum and its loss causes ataxia. However, the type of calcium channels and cerebellar functions affected by the loss of β4 are currently unknown. We therefore studied the ...

Sensory Integration in Single Neurons of the Cerebellar Cortex

To understand the computations performed by the neurons within cortical structures it is essential to determine the relationship between sensoryevoked synaptic input and the resulting pattern of output spikes. In the cerebellum, granule cells constitute the input layer, translating mossy fibre signals into parallel fibre input to Purkinje cells. Until now their small size and dense packing have...
